Fantasy - Warrior Priest - Paint In Progress #2

More work on the Warrior Priest this week, and while I still have a few bits and bobs to finish on him I now feel suitable refreshed to crack on a bit more with the Shattered Legion guys.

(I often find taking a break from a model prior to doing the finer details helps me not to rush and ruin an otherwise perfectly reasonable paint job.)
Following on from last week a lot of the work was done to refine the details of the areas already painted and to finish off at least a first pass on those areas still needed to be done.

Candles and other details
The bone and candle areas were highlighted by mixing in Screaming Skull and white to Rakarth Flesh. Post highlight the bone areas were given a glaze of Agrax Earthshade; whilst the candles received a thinned glaze of Cassandora yellow. This was done in order to help distinguish the two areas from each other.

Face and Tome Details
Thinned Drakenhoff Nightshade was painted into the deeper recesses on the face to provide better definition. The book pages were shaded with Dark Reaper and the edges were picked out by mixing white into the Rakarth Flesh base colour.

Gold Hourglass
The Gold was painted with Scalecolour's Dwarven Gold with Speed Metal mixed in to provide highlights. At each stage a wash of Agrax Earthshade was used to help blend the highlighted layers together. A wash of Hawk Turquoise was also applied to add a bit of tone and depth.

From my point of view there is still quite a bit to do on this model. Some of the highlights aren't crisp enough for my liking, and the chainmail isn't yet up to a standard that I would like. Then there are some of the missing details that need to be filled in, such as the glass in the hourglass and script on the tome. These are all things that I'll add in when I revisit this model, which I anticipate being during the next lull in my Shattered Legion enthusiasm.

Fantasy - Warrior Priest - Paint In Progress #1

I find that burn out is always a danger when focusing on a large single project. Having spent the last few months focused entirely on the Salamanders & Iron Hands I decided that now was time for a change, and therefore a brief interlude to the Shattered Legions.
I figure a fantasy model is about as far away as you can get from a Crusade era Space Marine force so I picked the Forgeworld Event Only Warrior Priest from 2013. It is also a really detailed model which meant I could go to town a little bit and just enjoy painting a single miniature (with a face because anybody who has read some of the older posts here knows that I apparently have a thing for faces).

Warrior Priest Paint In Progress
At the time of writing the model is about two thirds done I would guess, and whilst not up there with the true greats of the painting world I am more than happy with what I have achieved so far.

Starting with the face
The face I painted with a base of Cadian Fleshtone which I then highlighted up using Kislev Flesh. At this point I mixed a wash of Cadian Fleshtone (with Matt Medium and Glaze Medium) and applied this to the face. This reset all the highlights and created a really smooth transition between the layers. After this I added various purple/blue/brown tones to the Fleshtone and carefully painted them into the deeper recesses. The shallower recesses got a Fleshtone and red mix.

At this point I caught up in painting the model and there and forgot to take any 'in progress' shots...

The metals have been painted using the Scale Color metallic set washed with various GW glazes to attempt to give the metal a bit of variation. The chest piece was painted black and then had glazes and metallics stippled on to give it a battered appearance. I then mixed a wash with Vallejo Burnt Sienna pigment and applied this into the recesses. This was more of an experiment as I haven't played with pigments before.

The robes were painted using a Khorne Red base with highlights added by mixing various reds and flesh tones together. Blues and purples were used to shade, and the several glazes of Bloodletter Red were applied to tie it all together.

The strapping was based on Doombull brown with flesh tones again added to provide highlights. Washes of Agrax Earthshade and glazes of Reikland Fleshshade were used to tie it all together.

Next on the to do list are the skulls and the tome. These have already been painted with Rakarth Flesh and had some basic shading done by adding some Skavenblight Dinge and making a wash.

There is maybe another week or two's worth of work left to do here, although at this stage feeling somewhat refreshed from having the break I may well start working back on the Shattered Legion squad whilst carrying on with the Warrior Priest at the same time.

That being said I'll only have a couple of nights this week to work on models so who knows what I'll end up doing...

Troll Slayer Finished...

...and by finished I actually mean finished for the time being. I have found that if I get a model to a good all round state it's best to leave it for a while before re-visiting and touching up even further. Keeps it fresh and stops painting rot from setting in too much.

Got myself a light tent a few weeks back, though I found the lamps included to be of a pretty subpar quality, which was a bit disappointing. Today I got my hands on some more white light bulbs, printed off a nice gradient background (I'm old-school, no idea how to use Photoshop,) and voila, instant photo heaven! Or at least, something fair to semi-decent...

So the Troll Slayer made an ideal candidate for testing out the light tent, the results of which you see below. He'll get a run out in Warhammer Quest next time I meet up with Maelstrom and Rictus...

Coming up, some more WIP shots of the Phaedrus Chirgeon shown in my last post...

Work In Progress...

I've not had a lot of time to devote to painting over the last month or so, what with real life generally getting in the way. Not that I am complaining, but sometimes I've actually had the urge to paint and found myself far from bush and water pot.

That being said, over the last weekend I've managed to sit down for a longish painting session, and whilst I have nothing finished from that weekend I've progressed on several sets of models.

Most of it follows on from the list mentioned in my last update, but also a few bits for Warhammer Quest have found themselves lavished with my attention.

So without further ado or prattle...

First up some new WHQ pieces. I'm focusing on the Greenskin side of things, and figuring that these will be handled a lot I've not gone into my usual 'perfectionist' mode so these guys are a few finishing touches away from complete.

Also managed to get a bit more paint on some Space Wolves for the upcoming Zone Mortalis games with Rictus & Maelstrom (Ulrik will be used as a standard Wolf Priest):

And finally, I've now started work on a test Sedition Wars Samaritan:

With some more free time over the coming weekend, hopefully I'll be able to crack on with these some more... Famous last words...
