Mars Attacks - Buddy & Brandi - WIP #2

I used to write a lot, and quite well I thought, now I seem to struggle to put that much together. When it comes to the blog I concentrate on chucking up a few pictures and go 'enjoy'. I'd like to say that this will change in 2015, with maybe some tutorials, and reviews and other such like articles; but if it does it certainly wont be starting with this blog post.

This is because I have done nothing over the holiday period. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Nothing. Instead I decided to have a sort out. Therefore most of my free time has been spent clearing out the inordinate amount of crap and random boxes of models that I have. I've been at it for 6 nights now and I am still going. On the plus side I have found a rather large number of slotta bases. More than I'll ever need. Ever. Again.

So what do I have to show off (using the term loosely)? Well I finished up the basic work on Buddy and Brandi just before Christmas so they will be the subject of todays post.

I'll call this a WIP even though I don't plan on doing anything else to these two until after I have completed the base set.

So there you go, a short sweet picture post. Enjoy.

Mars Attacks - Buddy & Brandi - WIP #1

So no post last week, primarily due to family commitments and once again not having much to show.

Back on the Mars Attacks drive again this week, with work started on some of the Heroes from Mars Attacks (as well as starting the next five Martians). I started out with my two favourite models from the boxed game, Buddy and Brandi.

Close up shots really don't do these models justice (nor does my photography skills), they are first and foremost gaming pieces, and as such lack the detail of their GW counterparts. Brandy especially is a little flat around the facial area (although her face does still retain a good level of character).

Yet for what they are the detail is really nice and they do paint up really nicely, and make for a nice break from the Martian grunts.

I'm sticking fairly closely to the Mantic schemes adding in a few subtle variations here and there as not having to come up with alternative schemes means these are a lot quicker for me to paint (and painting these guys is all about getting them churned out relatively quickly.

Mars Attacks - Martians WIP #1

Last weekend myself, Rictus & Maelstrom had one of our periodical meet ups, hence the lack of update. I can't even brag about any of the games from last weekend as, on average I performed quite quite poorly (edging out Maelstrom in performance by the tiniest of margins).

Mars Attacks turned up this week (a rather large pledge from Mantic's kickstarter) and once I had spent an evening sorting through things it seemed only right to get on with the act of painting up some of the Martians to see how well they do, in fact, paint up.

Surprisingly well it turns out. Sure they aren't as detailed as some other gaming miniatures, but then at the scale and price point they are remarkably well done still. Mars Attacks is clearly aimed at the casual gamer as much as anything else, so these miniatures were never going to be the cream of the crop. But they are detailed and fun to paint, their simplicity making painting a simple and relaxing experience.

An experience totally undone by my inability to get good photos earlier in the day, which left me raging expletives at myself for the best part of an afternoon (it also put paid to a nice little 'tutorial' post I wanted to do).

I'll at least put up the colours I used in the next post on these guys, in the meantime here is a couple of WIP shots. This is pretty much the standard I plan to aim for at first pass - I may well revisit later on down the line to touch up the highlights, but not until I have a few more Mars Attacks models under my belt.
