I find that burn out is always a danger when focusing on a large single project. Having spent the last few months focused entirely on the Salamanders & Iron Hands I decided that now was time for a change, and therefore a brief interlude to the Shattered Legions.
I figure a fantasy model is about as far away as you can get from a Crusade era Space Marine force so I picked the Forgeworld Event Only Warrior Priest from 2013. It is also a really detailed model which meant I could go to town a little bit and just enjoy painting a single miniature (with a face because anybody who has read some of the older posts here knows that I apparently have a thing for faces).

Warrior Priest Paint In Progress |
At the time of writing the model is about two thirds done I would guess, and whilst not up there with the true greats of the painting world I am more than happy with what I have achieved so far.
|
Starting with the face |
The face I painted with a base of Cadian Fleshtone which I then highlighted up using Kislev Flesh. At this point I mixed a wash of Cadian Fleshtone (with Matt Medium and Glaze Medium) and applied this to the face. This reset all the highlights and created a really smooth transition between the layers. After this I added various purple/blue/brown tones to the Fleshtone and carefully painted them into the deeper recesses. The shallower recesses got a Fleshtone and red mix.
At this point I caught up in painting the model and there and forgot to take any 'in progress' shots...

The metals have been painted using the Scale Color metallic set washed with various GW glazes to attempt to give the metal a bit of variation. The chest piece was painted black and then had glazes and metallics stippled on to give it a battered appearance. I then mixed a wash with Vallejo Burnt Sienna pigment and applied this into the recesses. This was more of an experiment as I haven't played with pigments before.
The robes were painted using a Khorne Red base with highlights added by mixing various reds and flesh tones together. Blues and purples were used to shade, and the several glazes of Bloodletter Red were applied to tie it all together.
The strapping was based on Doombull brown with flesh tones again added to provide highlights. Washes of Agrax Earthshade and glazes of Reikland Fleshshade were used to tie it all together.
Next on the to do list are the skulls and the tome. These have already been painted with Rakarth Flesh and had some basic shading done by adding some Skavenblight Dinge and making a wash.
There is maybe another week or two's worth of work left to do here, although at this stage feeling somewhat refreshed from having the break I may well start working back on the Shattered Legion squad whilst carrying on with the Warrior Priest at the same time.
That being said I'll only have a couple of nights this week to work on models so who knows what I'll end up doing...
Looking awesome so far man.
ReplyDeleteCheers for putting up the skin recipe. Always something I've struggled with. You make it look so easy though.
